What do you think about at 2 in the morning?
I think about a lot. Maybe a little bit too much. I think about what time I might fall asleep. I think about what I did that day. Or in my case really, what I DIDN'T do that day. I think about the nightmares I know I'm going to have. I think about the conversations I had with people that day & the ones I didn't get to talk to. I think about what I want to do next month. I think about mistakes I've made. I think about people I've lost. I think about people I'm losing. I think about the things I love the most. I think about what kind of future I'm going to have. I think about a life without me in it. All at the same time. And it kills me every night.
But on this particular night, as I'm laying in this chilly hotel room overlooking the city lights, I can't help but think about all the good.
Sometimes we view the things & people we have as burdens. We complain about things they can't do & wish we had something else, not bearing in mind that those things & people are more important to us than we bother to acknowledge on our bad days. It's not until we lose them that we miss these things.. A lot... You may have had bad days & complained about the job, but at the end of the day it did more than pay the bills. It gave you a reason to wake up. It made you work to be better than you were yesterday. So you hate you car? What, too ugly? Too old? Too worn down? I'm sure you'd rather have that dead beat car than no car at all. It gets you to where you need to go. Besides, if your car could complain about you, I bet it would have A LOT to say. Your phone may not be working like it should, but it gets you job interviews & people to call at 4 am when you're bothered & can't sleep.
If you're reading this right now, you're lucky. Whatever it is you're thinking about, I'm sure it's all important. All the things I think about are important to me. But if any of those things can be turned from bad to good, do it. Why waste the energy worrying about things you can't take back, things you didn't do, or things you want to change? Bottom line is, we all know life doesn't work that way. When I was a kid, my teachers told me, "you get what you get & you don't throw a fit." This is something we could all live by. Trade the bad for the good. You'll regret the time wasted on petty things.
